Mix: His Lips are Warm and Sweet

You could write a history of 20th century music that focuses on its subject through the lens of tempo. Take the career of Miles Davis for example and follow him, accelerating to the light speed of bebop and breaking out into the vast open spaces of In A Silent Way on either side of the groove.

The genres of dance music too have always been defined by beats per minute: the majority of house records fall between 115-130 bpm; techno operates between 130 and 140; jungle took us over the 160 bpm barrier. And since the turn of the century, more and more artists have explored the liminal spaces between these ranges or created new genres such as dubstep by exploring half-times.

It is one of these liminal spaces that this mix explores.

95 beats per minute is a tempo at which hip hop at its fastest and slow-mo house merge and overlap. It’s a crossroads at which a diversity of musicians meet briefly before heading off into wildly different territories. So there’s a broad sweep to this mix: disco; raw, glitchy experimentalism; sonic brutality; mashed-up pop; narcotic house weighed down by its own tristesse – all underpinned by one pulse that holds everything together. 32 tracks in 72 minutes and 45 seconds. Mixed on the 24th of May 2013, 18th arrondissement, Paris. Dedicated to Dave Tinning in Dar es Salaam and Dan Besant in Phnom Penh: the original primitive souls.

Great mix – who’d have thought you could get so much out of 95bpm? Helped me get through my office afternoon, now going to listen again with more attention!
